I’ve Kept a Secret from You for Three Years…

In my element of creative experimentation - Gitte Backhausen, 2023

Dear Artlover,

I have kept a secret from you for about 3 years…

After almost 20 years of having an art practice, with a lengthy list of solo and group exhibitions behind me, running workshops and co-founding a gallery, about 3 years ago I decided to stir things up and applied to go to National Art School (NAS) in Sydney. Even though the comment at the interview, looking at my portfolio and CV, was: “you obviously know what you are doing”, I passionately expressed that it was important for me to keep learning and that I was craving conversations and professional critique of my work. I furthermore desired to expand my knowledge of art history to create a stronger foundation and understanding of my work in the context of the contemporary art world. Thankfully, they let me in.

I started my Bachelor of Fine Arts in February 2021. Since then I have gone part time, which means I have now completed most 3rd year subjects, leaving me only the 3rd year painting component for next year, finishing up my degree at the end of 2024.

However, I thought it was time to share the news, mainly due to two things

Artist Statement – Gitte Backhausen – Typographic Nostalgia

My father has a wonderful collection of old and odd objects from an interesting and creative life, now in his 90th year. Each time I visit my parents in my birth country Denmark, I come home to Australia with something interesting from his collection he has gifted to me. This is a book of prints created from brass-plates with Danish letters and signs, originally used as templates to create fonts for prints on paper, where my Dad worked as I was growing up. With a background in graphic design and a continued love of typography, this book is both a nostalgic indulgence and an ode to my Dad’s life and the gratitude for our shared creative minds.

The cut-outs in each page, speaks to the layers of memories, complexities in language as well as the missing pieces that naturally occur when living far apart. I love my life in Australia and call it home. At the same time, I sometimes feel sad about missing out on moments with my family overseas in everyday life, albeit grateful for our continued love and connection despite the physical distance.

The Grad Show Continues until 10th December 2023, open daily 11am – 5pm.
